The 5 Most Common Trading Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)
When you look at enough trade data, patterns emerge — not just in the markets, but in the traders themselves. The same handful of mistakes show up across almost every losing trader's journal. The good news: once you can name them, you can fix them. Here are the five we see most often.
- Revenge trading. You take a loss, you're frustrated, and you immediately re-enter to 'win it back'. The fix: impose a hard rule — after any loss, you close the charts for 15 minutes. No exceptions. The urge passes faster than you think, and the trades you take in that state are almost always your worst.
- Moving your stop loss. Your trade goes against you, and instead of accepting the loss you planned for, you widen the stop 'to give it room'. A small loss becomes a big one. The fix: once your stop is set, do not touch it. If you find yourself wanting to, that's the signal to close the trade manually — not to move the stop.
- Oversizing after a win. You have a great trade, you feel invincible, and the next trade you double your risk. The market doesn't care that you just won, and one bad oversized trade wipes out a week of good ones. The fix: fix your risk per trade as a percentage and never deviate. 1% means 1%, whether you're up or down.
- Entering before confirmation. You see a setup forming and jump in early to 'get a better price', only to watch it reverse. The fix: define exactly what confirmation looks like for each setup — a candle close, a level break, a specific time — and wait for it. If it doesn't confirm, you don't enter. Period.
- Not having a plan. You open the charts and just 'see what happens'. Trades taken without a plan have no edge — they're gambling. The fix: before you open the charts each day, write down what you're looking for. Which instruments, which setups, which session. If the market doesn't show you those things, you don't trade. A no-trade day is a valid outcome.
The common thread in all five is that they're behavioural, not technical. No indicator will save you from revenge trading. Only awareness and rules will. Track these five mistakes in your journal for a month. Count how many times each one costs you money. The one with the highest total — that's the one you fix first. Don't try to fix all five at once. Fix the one that's costing you the most, and the rest get easier.
